Letzten Monat bin ich für ein Wochenende mit dem Zug nach Freiburg gefahren. Das ganze Bahnsystem hier nennt sich die Deutsche Bahn. Normalerweise ist die Deutsche Bahn nicht sonderlich zuverlässig. Dieses Mal hat aber erstaunlicherweise alles wunderbar geklappt. Klopf auf Holz. Immerhin machen solche Kleinigkeiten mich glücklich. Die Zugstrecke lief zum größten Teil am Rhein entlang und somit war mein Plan, am Laptop zu arbeiten, hinfällig, weil ich dann doch lieber aus dem Fenster schaute und mit meinen Gedanken abdriftete. Wie auch immer, wer sich auf die Deutsche Bahn einlässt, sollte mit unvorhersehbaren Abenteuern rechnen.

Last month I took the train to Freiburg for a weekend. The whole train system here is called ‚Deutsche Bahn‘. Normally, Deutsche Bahn is not particularly reliable. But this time, amazingly, everything worked out wonderfully. Knock on wood. At least such little things make me happy. Most of the train route ran along the Rhine, so my plan to work on my laptop was cancelled because I preferred to look out the window and drift off with my thoughts. Anyway, anyone who gets involved with Deutsche Bahn should expect unpredictable adventures.
Na ja, aber mal zu dem Punkt, dass ich aus dem Westen von Deutschland komme. Der Westen ist an sich schon mal dicht besiedelter als der Süden und auch die Mentalität hier ist ein bisschen anders als im Süden.
In Freiburg gibt es einen Markt und am Wochenende tummeln sich hier die Leute und treffen sich, um eine Bratwurst zu essen. Vielleicht ist ja doch was dran am Wurstklischee… Ein weiterer Unterschied, der mir aufgefallen ist, sind die Straßenbahnen. In NRW, zumindest in Köln und Düsseldorf gibt es Ampeln oder ein Alarmsignal, welches dir signalisiert, dass du jetzt nicht über die Straße laufen solltest, da eine Straßenbahn im Anmarsch ist. In Freiburg ist das nicht der Fall und ich bin froh wieder lebend nach Hause gekommen zu sein.

Well, but to the point that I come from the west of Germany. The west is more densely populated than the south and the mentality here is also a bit different than in the south. In Freiburg there is a market and on weekends people gather here to eat a ‚bratwurst‘. Maybe there is something to the sausage cliché after all… Another difference I noticed is the tram. In NRW, at least in Cologne and Düsseldorf, there are traffic lights or an alarm signal that tells you not to run across the street now, because a tram is on the horizon. In Freiburg this is not the case and I am glad to have come home alive again.
